Blackjack Etiquette and Miscellany

  • When you first get to a table, put out the cash you want converted to chips. Be patient, for the dealer will change your money only after a round of cards is played.
  • After you make a bet, keep your hands off the chips in the betting box. The casino is worried about cheats who do past posting, that is, alter their bets depending on the cards they receive.
  • After you've been dealt your cards, keep them on the table in full view of the dealer. Never, ever hold them so that they are below the surface of the table. If you lower your cards this 'way, you'll be suspected of cheating.
  • If you want a hit, scrape the cards toward you if they've been dealt face down. If dealt face up, point your index finger at the cards for a hit.
  • If you want to stand pat, slide the cards under the chips in your betting box if the cards were dealt face down, but don't touch or lift your chips when doing this. If dealt face up, wave a hand, palm down, over the cards.
  • If you want to double down, turn the cards over and place a bet equal to your original bet next to the previously bet stack of chips. You'll receive one card face down as your double-down card.
  • If you want to split a pair, turn the cards over and place a bet equal to the amount of the original bet on the split card. You can now play out each card as a separate hand.
  • If you want to make an insurance bet, place half your original bet above your cards, in the area marked "Insurance pays 2-1”.
    - If you hit and bust your hand, turn it over at once so that the dealer can remove your cards and chips.
  • If you are dealt a blackjack, turn it over at once so you can be paid and the cards removed.
At the showdown, after the dealer has played out his hand, let him turn over your cards for you. Don't touch them, let him do that.
  • Don't complain about your bad cards. If you don't like what's happening at the table, leave but don't annoy the other players or the dealer.
  • Tip the dealer by either placing the bet for him in the insurance box or in your own betting box.
  • While playing twenty-one, you're entitled to free drinks or cigarettes or cigars. If you want any of these things, ask the  dealer to send over a cocktail waitress. He'll be happy to oblige
